Napier Art Deco Quarter
A city centre rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake, with Art Deco Trust tours along Tennyson and Emerson Streets.
After the 1931 earthquake levelled central Napier, the city was rebuilt almost entirely in the Art Deco style of the day. The result is one of the most complete Art Deco townscapes anywhere, concentrated around Tennyson and Emerson Streets, about eight minutes by car from Ahuriri.
The Art Deco Trust runs guided walking tours and self-guided routes past landmarks like the Daily Telegraph Building, the Masonic Hotel, and the Napier Municipal Theatre. The annual Art Deco Festival in February brings the whole quarter to life.
